Notes:

Traced origins to the silk throwing business of Samuel Courtauld, 1793-1881, established at Bocking, Essex, in 1816. Opened another mill at nearby Halstead in 1825 and in 1828 joined with his brother George and others as Courtauld Taylors & Courtauld, later Samuel Courtauld & Co. Emerged as the leading UK producer of back mourning crape. Incorporated as Samuel Courtauld & Co Ltd in 1891 and floated in 1913 as Courtaulds Ltd. Diversified into artificial silk/rayon production with great success from very early 20th century. 1909 established American Viscose Corp to make rayon within USA. From 1930s diversified into other areas such as chemicals, paints and packaging via British Cellophane Industries Ltd; acquired other UK rayon producers, eg British Celanese, and extended generally into textiles, building a vertically integrated business from fabric production to clothing manufacture. By 1970s largest textile manufacturer in the world When led, inter alia, by Lord Kearton and Sir Arthur Knight. Textiles demerged into a public company in 1990 leaving chemicals within Courtaulds Plc. Both textile and chemical businesses subsequently acquired by major international corporations.
