Eltham Palace was long-leased by Stephen and Virginia Courtauld in 1933; he was brother of the chairman of Courtaulds, Samuel, 1876-1947, and inheritor of great wealth from it. They built a substantial home on the site, noted for its ultra-modern interiors and contents. They lived there until 1944
