Established in 1900 as a national daily by Sir Arthur Pearson. Sir Max Aitken, later Lord Beaverbrook, acquired control in 1916, when sometime owned by Beaverbrook Newspapers. 1918 established the 'Sunday Express' and also sometime the 'Scottish Daily Express'. 1927 also printed in Manchester. Under Beaverbrook emerged by 1940s as the largest circulation newspaper in the world, providing him with great wealth and political influence. Subsequently in decline. 1977 acquired by Trafalgar Holdings Ltd and subsequently other owners including Richard Desmond's Northern Shell. Continues in 2022 in ownership of Reach Plc, formerly Trinity Mirror Group
