Established in 1898. 1899-1901 acquired control of Deutsche Grammophon Aktien Gessellschaft from Berliner Brothers. to acquire selling rights to Emile Berliner's gramophone. 1899 renamed Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd, resuming its original name in 1907. Early on closely associated with Victor Talking Machine Co of USA from which it derived its machine requirements, organised cross shareholdings and colluded over market control. 1906-08 established UK manufacturing plant at Hayes for gramophones and gramophone players. By 1914 had factories in Austria, France, Germany, India, Russia and Spain. From 1921 controlled by Victor Co and later by Radio Corp of America. 1929 acquired Marconiphone Co, radio equipment manufacturers. 1931 merged with others to form Electric & Musical Industries Ltd (EMI)
