Traced origins to the 14th century but developed a more defined form in the 15th century when the Office of Ordnance was created, known from 1683 as the Board of Ordnance. It was wound up in 1855 and its responsibilities reallocated largely to the War Office; its naval functions had been removed in 1830. In this long period, its activities changed and broadened. As well as activities closely aligned with active military / naval operations, it had important economic functions in the acquisition, distribution, storage, supply and, not least, manufacture of military and naval equipment for the army and Royal Navy, as well as maintaining garrison buildings and fortifications. It operated ordnance yards and gunpowder storage facilities and manufactured artillery, small arms, explosives, etc
