Presents the results of a survey of archives undertaken by the Business Archives Council in the early 1980s of the 1,000 oldest surviving registered companies on the Register of Companies. Formations cover the period 1856-89 with the majority formed in the 1870s and 80s. Of the 1,000 companies, the archives of 674 were located and surveyed. A very wide range of business activities are covered. The book almost entirely comprises series level archive descriptions and historical profiles per company
