Autobiographical account of his business career which is related in broad detail. From 1898 worked for F A Mattievich & Co of Batoum and Baku which was involved in oil trading. Subsequently ran the London office of the US merchants, MacAndrews & Forbes, and after 1918 became head of the important Indian agency business of Andrew Yule & Co of Calcutta and George Yule & Co of London, then controlled by the merchant bankers, Morgan Grenfell & Co. In 1928 he became a partner in Morgans and became important in their affairs. In 1944 succeeded Montagu Norman as Governor of the Bank of England, retiring in 1949
