First published 1983. Detailed account of the role of the Upper Mersey in the economic development of its area largely in the 19th century. Particularly focused on the role of the river port of Runcorn but also coverage of the river ports of Frodsham and Warrington and the traffic of the River Weaver to Northwich and Winsford. Includes chapters: 'Growth of Runcorn as a port, 1786-1830' [pp26-45]; 'Runcorn. An independent customs port, 1847-50' [pp58-63]; and 'Port of Runcorn and the Manchester Ship Canal' [pp162-90].
