Spike Island, Widnes, was the site of early chemical industry development, the key businesses being John Hutchinson & Co Ltd, alkali manufacturers, and William Gossage & Sons Ltd, soap manufacturers. Hutchinson merged into United Alkali Co Ltd in 1890. Both firms were in decline by early 20th century
