Notes:
Deals with British Steel Corp and its preparation for privatisation in the 1980s via slimming down its operations, privatising those parts most easily hived off, and employing contractors in place of permanent staff. Mostly devoted to the experience of its Port Talbot workforce at this time which was analysed in early 1980s as a 'community study' funded by the Social Science Research Council. 'This book is about how ... unemployment was created and recreated and how it affected the lives of many people in the town. In particular it records the way in which permanent jobs were "replaced" by temporary jobs which condemned sections of the population to frequent spells of unemployment'
