The writer, J A Bancroft, 1882-1957, was for many years an academic geologist before c1920s when settled in southern Africa to work for Anglo American Corp, British South Africa Co, De Beers, etc. The volume was completed by T D Guernsey following Bancroft's death. The sections include: 'Old workings'; 'Laying the foundations' including much re European extraction; 'Period of expectation and disappointment, 1895-1922'; 'Period of transition, 1923-31'; 'Work of the concession companies' being essays on individual companies; 'Period of achievement and reward from 1931' - again largely being profiles of individual businesses.
