'The purpose of this paper is to confront the literature on embeddedness and trust ... with the complex pattern of relations that made up the jewellery industry in Birmingham in the late nineteenth century'. In particular deals with malfeasance and mistrust between firms that was endemic in the industry especially in times of depression and the means of dealing with this through the establishment of business interest associations to establish mechanisms of control and codify norms of behaviour. In this case the associations provided credit checks, investigation, law enforcement, etc
