Notes:

Comprises short introductory chapters but mostly transcriptions of documents, mostly 1639-44, created by Lowther, namely the contents of four small notebooks, three kept solely by him, a letterbook, 1632-3, 1639-42, and some miscellaneous papers. The notebooks contain accounts, memoranda, etc, relating to his estates. The papers reveal much about the development of the estates of the Whitehaven branch of the Lowther family - notably the development of the port and trade of Whitehaven, coal extraction, salt production, etc, as well as the extension of his landed estate.
