Notes:

Deals with 'the place of industrial welfare in British labour management' in the hundred years to 1939 with a strong focus on 'the role of the company and its internal organisation rather than upon the growth of trades unionism, collective bargaining, and battles over wages and hours'. Deals with the factors influencing the nature of provision, their variation between businesses and industries, the motivations of business in making provisions, the nature of the control exercised, etc. Comprises an introductory chapter - 'Industrial relations, the company and welfare' [pp1-24] and then considers the position in five industries - railway transport, gas production, iron & steel production, chemicals and brewing. A further chapter considers provision by other leading industries. Also covers the Labour Co-partnership Association and Industrial Welfare Society and the role of employers in them.
