Based on the recorded reminiscences of boatmen [?when recorded] which the compiler has edited and amalgamated to form a continuous 'readable' account. In doing so provides an account of working lives, of the operation of the navigation and connecting canals and of the work of the Severn & Canal Carrying Co Ltd for whom most of the bargemen worked. The chapters are: 'Barge traffic to Gloucester'; 'Longboats to Worcester'; 'Into the Midlands'; 'Working horse boats'; Cargoes and destinations'; Owners'; 'Motor tugs on the river'; 'Bores and freshes'; 'Motor boats to Birmingham'; Severn motor barges and tankers'; 'War and nationalisation'. In addition two chapters by the author cover the historical development of carrying on the Severn and on the history of the Severn & Canal Carrying Co Ltd. Also some coverage of Cadburys as customers
