Written by a commissioned corporate history writer providing a narrative account of the development of the Saltend, Hull, industrial site from its origins as an oil landing jetty, constructed in 1914, to a major petrochemical works constructed post 1945. By 1921 British Petroleum along with other oil companies had a depot there along with storage tanks. 1922 Herbert Green & Co Ltd constructed a major plant for distilling industrial alcohol. 1924 Distillers Co Ltd acquired a controlling interest and later full ownership of what was renamed Hull Distillery Co Ltd in c1929. Also in 1929 British Industrial Solvents Ltd was formed to build a very large chemical works at Saltend in which Distillers had a major interest. 1932 British Vinegars Ltd formed to build a vinegar production works. 1967 British Petroleum, which meanwhile had been developing its activities at Saltend, acquired Distillers' chemical interests including those at Saltend when they became known as BP Chemicals (United Kingdom) Ltd.
