Outlines the activities and performance of institutions formed by leading typefounders to protect their interests, especially following the introduction of typecasting machinery from the late 1840s. These were the generally unsuccessful United Founders, established in 1851 by eight London firms, one in Sheffield and three in Edinburgh, and its successor, the Typefounders' Association of five leading firms. The latter was much more effective and notable for its members' decision to cease advertising. Discontinued c1952 when reduced to one member
