Notes:
Scholarly account dealing with the British-owned motor car industry, 1945-94, and its decline, notably from the 1970s and notably focusing on British Motor Corp, British Leyland and Rover and the associated government revival programme. Takes a new approach to the subject by examining individual functions to show that firms suffered 'pervasive weaknesses, particularly in engineering, product design characteristics, product quality and distribution', issues 'largely overlooked in previous studies' which have concentrated primarily on manufacturing, investment and corporate strategies. Identifies an institutional rigidity that persisted regardless of ownership, management an macro environment
