Geographical gazetteers

These comprise a small and very specific group of directories which were produced at the turn of the 19th/20th centuries by a small number of commercial publishers. They deal with a specific city or town; neighbouring cities and towns; or counties, and include short profiles of individual businesses with, most notably, illustrations of premises. They therefore provide a guide to local businesses, say, for use by visitors. Inclusion was based on payment of a fee and the coverage is therefore not comprehensive. Inclusion was deemed a form of advertising so the business profiles are overtly generous and often sycophantic and verbose and their true value perhaps lays in the illustrations. Taken together, these directories cover many thousands of businesses
