Hawkes was established in 1865 and also came to publish music and make instruments and became Booseys' chief rival. Following merger consolidated position as a leading international classical music publishing house. In 1944 acquired lease of Royal Opera House. Also 1940s acquired Besson & Co. Sometime post war converted to a public company. From c1970s musical instrument production declined and in 2003 sold off.
