Traced origins to 1907 when established by Marquis Clayton, importers of general produce at Liverpool, and in particular by (Sir) Michael Kielberg, d1958. 1915 their molasses interests formed into British Molasses Co Ltd which in 1921 was reorganised as Pure Cane Molasses Co Ltd. Traded in and shipped, stored and distributed molasses. Owned ships from 1921, operating as Athel Line, which also carried oil. Expanded very rapidly in 1920s. 1925 relocated to London. 1926 United Molasses Co Ltd to Acquire Pure Cane Molasses Co Ltd and British Molasses Co Ltd. Late 1920s acquired important USA interests, eg National Distillers Products Corp. Reorganised 1931. Developed strong links with Distillers Co Ltd, as customers, and with Tate & Lyle Ltd as suppliers. 1940 established Athel Line Ltd to hold shipping interests. 1949 acquired interest in Anchor Line Ltd and fully owned it in 1953 when, in total, owned over 30 ships. 1965 acquired by Tate & Lyle Ltd
