Notes:

Established at Chiswick, London, in 1864 as Steam Wagon & Carriage & Co. 1872 known as John I Thornycroft & Co when builders of light craft. 1901 incorporated. Came to specialise in light warship building for Royal Navy, early on especially torpedo boats and destroyers. Set up commercial vehicle business 1895 at Basingstoke. Also made marine engines at Reading. Shipbuilding moved to Woolston in 1904. Merged with Vosper Ltd in 1960s to form Vosper Thornycroft Ltd.
