Traced origins to c1801 when Thomas and Hugh Baird established an ironworks at Shotts supported by coal and ironstone mines. By 1810 known as New Shotts Iron Co and in 1824 was acquired by Shotts Iron Joint Stock Co which had been formed for the purpose. Now developed into a major iron making and foundry business, the products from the latter including initially domestic wares and a little latter structural/architectural metalwork. In due course a vast range of goods were to be produced. 1831 acquired Caledonian Foundry. By 1860s coal and iron ore mining emerged as leading activities in their own right. Late 1860s reformed by act of parliament. 1897 incorporated. 20th century acquired several coal mining companies. 1947 coal mining, foundry, brickmaking, etc, assets nationalised by being vested in National Coal Board. At same time iron production was closed down
