Traces origins to Henry W Schneider, 1817-87, whose family firm of John Schneider & Co of London had international mining interests. From 1840 Schneider established iron ore mines in north Lancashire and Cumbria, especially at Dalton in Furness and Askam, as Schneider Hannay & Co. 1859 established iron production plant at Barrow in Furness which in 1866 merged to form Barrow Iron & Steel Co Ltd.
