Thomas Savery (Savory), c1650-1715, was inventor of atmospheric steam engine used in lifting water, say, in mines and waterworks. Patented invention in 1698. Opened London workshop 1701-05. Linked with Thomas Newcomen who invented an improved steam engine in c1710. Following his death, a joint stock company, Proprietors of the Invention for Raising Water by Fire, was formed to acquire and exploit Savery's patent right and in this Newcomen was also interested
