Traces origins to 1858 when established by John and Stephen Salter, trading as J & S Salter, to acquire boat building business of Isaac King. Later known as Salter Brothers. Built wide variety of craft, especially for Oxford University, including racing boats for which in 1860s developed a worldwide reputation. Latterly also built narrow boats and cabin cruisers and finally withdrew from boatbuilding in 1980s. Alongside boat building provided a range of services to sport of rowing. 1888 started steam boat pleasure cruises along Thames and also rented out boats. In addition provided passenger services on the Thames, notably between Oxford and Kingston upon Thames. Continues as Salters Steamers Ltd. Also acquired and latterly developed Thames side property, especially residential, which by 1960s had become a significant activity as its traditional activities declined
