Traced origins to 1844 and establishment of Bell Brothers by, inter alia, (Sir) Isaac Lothian Bell, 1816-1904. Initially based on ironworks at Wylam upon Tyne. 1854 established Clarence Iron Works at Port Clarence, Stockton on Tees, with offices at Middlesbrough. By 1870s had emerged as a major producer also operating coal, ironstone and limestone resources and associated infrastructure including the Cleveland Railway. Also had chemical works. In late 1880s diversified into steelmaking. Reorganised 1899 as a public company and soon after Dorman, Long & Co Ltd acquired a major interest in the business and subsequently it was fully owned by them. Isaac Bell also established on his own account important chemical works at Gateshead and salt works. He was an influential director of North East Railway Co
