Dates to 17th century when operated in Manchester area as carriers. In first half of 18th century led by James Pickford, d1768. By late 18th century provided flying wagon services between Manchester and London and diversified into canal carrying. Became based on London. 1817 acquired by Joseph Baxendale and others. By mid 19th century gave up carrying in favour of movement by rail and became a nationally spread business. 1901 incorporated as Pickford's Ltd. 1912 amalgamated with other leading London carriers under Carter Paterson Group. Pickfords sold to Hays Cartage Co Ltd, owned by Proprietors of Hays Wharf, in 1919 when focused on heavy haulage, household removals and dock work. Expanded rapidly. 1933 acquired by the four major railway companies and therefore nationalised in 1948 and became part of British Road Services.
