Traced origins to 1856 when (Sir) William H Perkin, 1838-1907, with his father and brother, Thomas Dix Perkin, established Perkin & Sons. Perkin had invented the first synthetic dye, aniline purple (mauve), and was to advance dyeing techniques so as to enable large scale production. Set up in business in 1857, built plant at Greenford Green and quickly emerged as a major producer. Sold business and patents on retirement to Brooke, Simpson & Spiller in c1874. Alongside his business interests, emerged as a distinguished chemist
