Swiss based and internationally spread food processing business which was started at Vevey, Switzerland, in 1866 by Henri Nestle. Traces UK origins to a London sales office opened in 1868. Initial products included milk based bady foods and condensed milk. Modern Nestle business began in 1901 following merger of Nestle's business with Anglo Swiss Condensed Milk Co to form Nestle & Anglo Swiss Condensed Milk Co. Manufacturing in UK commenced in 1905 and by 1913 making chocolate at Hayes. By 1939 making instant coffee also at Hayes. Subsequently acquired UK businesses, most notably Cross & Blackwell Ltd in 1950, Findus Ltd in 1930 and Rowntree Plc of York in 1988. Quoted on London Stock Exchange from 1989. Continues
