Traced origins to 1859 when ironworks established by Schneider, Hannay & Co at Barrow. 1864 Barrow Haematite Steel Co Ltd was established by a small group of wealthy shareholders which in 1865 acquired Schneider Hannay and erected steel plant, with local landowner, the Duke of Devonshire, as chairman. Part of an interlocking group of businesses - railway, shipbuilding, coal, docks - which transformed Barrow into an industrial town. Owned collieries and iron ore mines and emerged as a leading producer; by 1872 it was Britain's largest steel company. Railway rails became an important component of output. By 1880s had begun to experience [irreversible] decline. 1942 steelworks owned by Ministry of Supply. 1948 ironworks owned by Barrow Iron Works Ltd which in turn was owned by Barrow Hematite Steel Co Ltd. Late 1950s nationalised and denationalised. 1961 steelworks acquired by United Steel Co Ltd. 1963 both ironworks and steelworks closed
