Traced origins to 1924 when established as Marley Joinery Works, later Marley Tile Works, by Owen Aisher, 1876-1963, at Harrietsham. Incorporated 1926 as Marley Tile Co Ltd, makers of concrete roof tiles and tiling contractors. Expanded rapidly in 1920s through opening of new works. In 1934 reorganised as Marley Tile (Holding) Co Ltd, a public company. 1948 started floor tile manufacture. From 1946 developed overseas operations. 1959 tile retailing begins, later known as Payless DIY Ltd, and also building products wholesale. From 1960s developed other building products. Also established a motor vehicle parts business which was sold to Magna International Inc in 1996. Remaining business acquired by Etex Group of Belgium in 1998
