Traced origins to Andrew Barclay, 1814-90, who in 1840 joined in partnership with Thomas McCulloch to make mill shafting. From 1842 in business on his own account and from 1847 focused on winding engines for collieries. Made pumping engines from 1856 and industrial locomotives from 1858. 1871 set his sons up in business as Barclay & Co to build locomotives. Subsequently these businesses traded erratically, being in difficulties several times and continuing only because of support of creditors. Incorporated in 1892. 1930 acquired John Cochrane (Barrhead) Ltd, engine builders, and in 1963 acquired goodwill of North British Locomotive Co Ltd. 1972 acquired by Hunslet Group of Leeds and in 1989 renamed Hunslet Barclay Ltd
