Captain Joseph Huddart, 1741-1816, was a ship's captain in service of East India Co and later a civil engineer extensively involved with harbour engineering. In business he was most noted for his invention of ropemaking machinery and, with partners, his application of it in a large and successful ropemaking business at Limehouse sometime known as 'Patent Cable Manufactory'. 1846 the firm was referred to as 'rope makers, sail makers, power loom canvas manufacturers'. The firm became known as Sir Joseph Huddart & Co. Closed by 1870?
