Traced origins to 1832 when established by Abel Heywood, 1810-93, as a wholesale newsagency, distributing in particular newspapers published for the poor. By 1851 largest UK newspaper wholesaler. Also publisher of, inter alia, newspapers, topographical guides, local authors and local periodicals. Also papermaking at Stockport and retail bookselling. In partnership with his son, Abel, from 1864 as Abel Heywood & Son. Later incorporated as Abel Heywood & Son Ltd. 1963 acquired by Dawson Surridge & Co Ltd, later Dawson Holdings Plc
