Traces origins to 1838 when established by John Hardman, 1811-67, and the architect, Augustus Pugin, to produce metal work in medieval/gothic style for churches and domestic buildings. Soon diversified into furnishings, silverware, embroidery and, especially, stained glass. Pugin acted as chief designer until his death in 1852. From 1850s known as John Hardman & Co following entry of Hardman's nephews, especially John Hardman Powell, to the firm. 1883 metalwork and stained glass activities separated into different firms - Hardman Powell & Co and John Hardman & Co - until reunited in 1914. Metal work subsequently given up. Stained glass production continues as John Hardman Studios.
