Traced origins to 1871 when a group of navy and army offices established the Army & Navy Co-operative Society Ltd for supply of domestic goods to its members who were drawn from the officer and senior non-commissioned ranks. Warehouse in Victoria opened 1872 and sales effected by visit or mail order. Paris agency opened 1875 and another at Leipzig in 1877. Also opened warehouses in towns / cities in Britain, especially those with strong army / navy links. Manufactured many items sold. 1890s opened depots and stores in India. 1934 renamed Army & Navy Stores Ltd. Began to develop as a conventional department store and in 1950s and 60s acquired several provincial department store businesses. 1973 acquired by House of Fraser Ltd [2023]
