Traces origins to 1814 when opened as Wheal Rose, later known as East Wheal Rose. Most productive lead mine in Cornwall. Served by light railway from Newquay from 1849. Closed 1881 and reopened 1882-85 by East Wheal Rose Co Ltd which in 1886 merged with three other business to form Shepherd's United Ltd
