Doves Press was established at Hammersmith in c1899 by Thomas J Cobden-Sanderson, 1840-1922, a fine bookbinder from 1884 and a fine printer, and by (Sir) Emery Walker, 1851-1933, engraver and fine printer. Both had sometime been associated with the Kelmscott Press and at Doves Press were much noted for their output. Cobden-Sanderson specialised as a craftsman in binding individual books, notably for the Kelmscott Press, using traditional materials and started Doves Bindery in c1893. The Doves Press emerged as one of the great private presses of its day. The partnership with Emery Walker was dissolved in 1908 following a dispute, when C-S continued alone until c1921 when bindery/press closed [2024]
