Opened in 1920 as London's official airport on site of former airfileds which also accomodated National Aircraft Factory No 1, built in 1918. Known as Croydon Aerodrome. Base for Imperial Airways, which operated scheduled services, and others. Subsequently base for British Overseas Airways Corp from its formation in 1938. Military use 1939-45. Replaced by Heathrow as London's airport in 1952 and closed 1959
