William Cotesworth, c1668-1726, was notable as a self-made man who rose from humble origins to be a very powerful figure in the North East coal trade. He fulfilled roles of salaried employee, rising to junior partner, rising to independent entrepreneur but identified as an outsider on account of his origins. For long based at Gateshead from late 1680s. From 1706 he operated independently when focused on coal and salt extraction and trading. In 1716 inherited the valuable estate of William Ramsay, his brother in law. From early on, friendly with Liddell family of Ravensworth, landowners and coal entrepreneurs. Leader in organisation of coal mining cartels in North East including The Regulation and The Grand Alliance
