Notes:

Established 1825 by Cyrus and James Clark, Quakers, to make footwear, especially sheepskin slippers. Initially relied totally on outworkers and established factory production only in late 19th century. Opened first retail store in 1930s and quickly built a national retail chain initially under the Peter Lord label. From 1940s built some 15 factories but withdrew from manufacturing in the late 1990s. Continues in 2008 as a design and retailing business with production overseas
