Notes:

Extraction of lead and silver [and sometime gold] dated to early times. Landowners were Hope family, Earls of Hopetoun, who early on worked the mines themselves. From early 18th century leased to Scots Mining Co until 1861 when operated by Leadhills Mining Co until 1876 when worked by Leadhills Silver Lead Mining & Smelting Co Ltd until 1903. From then until closure in 1929 leased by Leadhills Co Ltd. With nearby Wanlockhead Lead Mines sometime responsible for 80% of Scottish lead output. In early 20th century noted for labour disputes
