Traced origins to c1828 when Felix Austin, having acquired a series of moulds, established a works at New Road, Whitechapel, to make products from artificial stone. In 1840 entered into partnership with John Seeley, maker of products from artificial limestone and former student of Royal Academy. Emerged as a leading maker in artificial stone of garden furniture - vases, urns, fountains, figures, etc. Continued to about early 1870s
