Humphrey Chetham, bc1580-1653, came from a leading woollen cloth trading family based near Manchester. With his brother, George, d1627, who was based in London, their partnership from c1605 bought wool, arranged for its manufacture into cloth by rural clothmakers then sold it in London. Developed into a major business. Also became important moneylenders in Lancashire to family and gentry and also estate owners [2023]
