Notes:

John Clerk, 1611-74, was a Scottish merchant who in his early life was resident in Paris and emerged as a leading trader in luxury goods which, with other goods, he exported to Scotland. Returned to Scotland in 1646 and acquired a landed estate at Penicuik in 1650s. His son was Sir John Clerk of Penicuik Bt, c1649-1722, who inherited his estates, and his grandson, 1676-1755, was also called John
