Traces origins to the haberdashery business of Moritz Bunzl, established at Bratislava, Slovakia, in 1854. By 1883 transferred to Vienna and known as Bunzl & Biash AG. 1880s diversified into paper manufacture and in 1920s began to make cigarette filters. Late 1930s Bunzl family relocated to UK to avoid persecution as Jews and established Tissue Papers Ltd to use tissue and crepe paper in manufacture of filters. After 1945 worked closely with Austrian business and in 1952 renamed Bunzl Pulp & Paper Ltd. 1957 floated and 1970 acquired Austrian business. Subsequently diversified into distribution and outsourcing activities, gradually divesting manufacturing activities including Filtrona subsidiary. Continues as Bunzl Plc, a major distribution business serving catering, food processing, retailing, healthcare, etc, industries
