Traced origins to (Sir) William Brown, son of Alexander Brown of Baltimore, who settled at Liverpool in 1808 to established the UK end of his father's merchanting business which included acting as agents for US merchants and shipowners. By 1815 trading as William & James Brown. By 1820s had emerged as largest cotton merchants at Liverpool. Also developed shipping interests. Established 1824 as a Liverpool branch of the US merchants, Alexander Brown & Sons. Renamed Brown Shipley & Co from 1837. Specialised in trade finance from 1850s. Opened in London in 1863. 20th century emerged as a London based merchant bank. Incorporated 1946. Sold to Guinness Mahon 1993. Name continues as an investment house. See also Alexander Brown & Sons
