By 1815 trading as William & James Brown. By 1820s had emerged as largest cotton merchants at Liverpool. Also developed shipping interests. Established 1824 as a Liverpool branch of the US merchants, Alexander Brown & Sons. Renamed Brown Shipley & Co from 1837. Specialised in trade finance from 1850s.
