Notes:

Established 1871 as Brown Bayley & Dixon. Built new works to exploit Bessemer process making, inter alia, railway rails, tyres, axles, springs, etc. 1873 incorporated as Brown Bayley & Dixon Ltd. 1876 reconstructed and in 1877 changed name to Brown Bayley's Steel Works Ltd. When Harry Brearley, 1871-1948, joined from Thos Firth & Co Ltd in 1915 focused on alloy and stainless steels. Reorganised late 1940s when assets for nationalisation placed in Brown Bayley Steels Ltd which was duly nationalised in 1951. Denationalised 1955 when floated as a public company in which Brown Bayley's Steel Works Ltd held a 50% interest. Not renationalised but in 1969 acquired by Industrial Reorganisation Corp and in 1973 acquired by Dunford Hadfields Ltd
