Traces its origins to the telegraph and telephone services which came under ownership and control of the General Post Office in the late 19th century. By 1912, following its absorption of National Telephone Co Ltd, had a virtual monopoly of telecommunication services in UK. In 1969 known as Post Office Telecommunications, a division of Post Office. 1980 renamed British Telecommunications and in 1981 became entirely separate from the Post Office. Partly privatised 1984 as British Telecommunications Plc and fully privatised by 1993. In 2001 British Telecommunications Plc was reorganised when its mobile business, BT Cellnet, was hived off into O2 and the remainder of its business placed in BT Group Plc. 2013 launched TV channels - BT Sport. 2016 bought the very large EE mobile phone business. In 2024 remains the major telecommunications business in UK but very substantial international interests [2024]
